X-Lite and Skype-type phones

I've been using X-Lite successfully with headsets and that all works fine. My question is that does X-Lite work with Skype-style phones? I am looking to have as many options for handsets available to me as possible, and am wondering if anyone has ever done/tried this. Please feel free to recommend models and such.
